Anonymous, 3rd-4th centuries. Seal (Lead, 15 mm, 5.82 g). MNHMO-[N]EVE ('Remember!') Hand pinching an ear lobe between thumb and index finger. Rev. Uneven hemispherical swelling. Cf. Boersema/Dalzell, Vossen collection 212 (same imagery, different legend). Very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

According to the Romans, memory and remembrance were located in the ear (Plinius, NH VII, 105, Vergilius Eclog. VI, 3). Imagery of a hand pinching an ear was therefore popular in Roman gem engraving.
